Mission, Vision and History
The mission of Affinity Health Plan is to improve the health of underserved populations by providing comprehensive, affordable, high quality health care coverage, and by striving, in collaboration with its primary care providers, to improve care-seeking and care-giving.
Originally known as The Bronx Health Plan (TBHP), Affinity was founded in 1986 by several community health centers, based on the belief that a managed care plan...built on a foundation of comprehensive, community-based primary care...could improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care provided to the poor.
We began by offering a managed care program to
Medicaid beneficiaries. In 1990 and 1991, we opened our
UniCare and
Child Health Plus programs, thus providing affordable health care coverage for low-income, uninsured individuals and families. In the Fall of 2001, we further expanded coverage for the uninsured with the introduction of New York State's
Family Health Plus program, and in the fall of 2003, we introduced our
Sunrise Program, subsidized by The September 11th Fund, for uninsured workers in lower Manhattan who suffered job loss as a result of the World Trade Center attack.
While expanding our program offerings, we also expanded our geographic reach. In the early 1990's, the company expanded from the Bronx into Manhattan. Then, in 1999, TBHP acquired GENESIS Healthplan, thereby expanding its service area to include all of New York City and the surrounding counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland and Orange.
We continued to operate GENESIS Healthplan as a separate company until the end of 2001. Effective January 1, 2002, we combined the GENESIS and TBHP businesses to form a single entity...Affinity Health Plan.
