  • How to protect yourself and others

The coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19, is devastating families and communities across the nation. Although there is no vaccine against the coronavirus, you may reduce your risk of infection by following the tips below.

How to protect yourself and others

    • Practice social distancing by keeping space between yourself and others. Stay at least six feet (two meters) from other people, do not gather in groups, and avoid crowded areas. Stay at home as much as possible; go out only to go grocery shopping or run other important errands, such as picking up prescription medications.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands. If you’re unable to wash your hands, use hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol.
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a mask or cloth when around others and when you have to go out in public (to go grocery shopping or to get other essentials for your family).
    • Clean frequently-touched surfaces daily. This includes disinfecting tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, refrigerator handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
    • Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or use the inside of your elbow.
    • If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you should quarantine in a separate room if possible. Have another family member take care of the family dog or cat. Do not pet your animals and keep your distance. Although there is no evidence you can contact the virus from your pet, there are some reports that humans can transmit the virus to their animals, specifically to cats.
